About

Spokane Lilac Festival Association, Spokane

The word “Nilack” (blue) was used by the Arabs to describe the color obtained when coarse cotton robes were dyed with the fermented juice of the indigo plant. When the Persians began using the dye, they accepted the Arab word for the pleasing color, but softened it to Nilaj. Perhaps centuries later when a beautiful shrub with bluish flowers was observed on their hillside, the Persians named it Nilag. But Nilag meant the indigo-dye; to avoid confusion the word gradually became Lilaj to the Persians and Lilak to the Arabs.
